Non-Credit Courses

Level 1 Courses

Reading and Writing 1: This course is a high beginning level of reading and writing for ESOL students who wish to improve their fluency in English for professional and academic purposes. This course will focus on fiction and non-fiction readings adapted for ESOL, and on writing short narrative and descriptive paragraphs.

Grammar 1: In this course, you will learn basic rules and structures of English grammar. For example, Commands (Give the book to him.), Pronouns (he, she, they, I my, his, her), Simple present tense (I go to school.), Present continuous (I am studying English), Simple Past (I went to school.), Future (I am going to buy a car.), and Can/can’t (I can speak English.) By the end of the class, you will be able to use the basic grammatical structures in writing and speaking. You will have a few tests and a final in addition to assignments given by the instructor.

Level 2 Courses

Reading and Writing 2: In this course, you will learn ways to help you read more actively to analyze and understand reading texts in addition to how to write clear, well-organized and effective sentences and paragraphs at an intermediate level. In this course you will have reading and writing assignments, quizzes, a midterm and a final exam. 

Grammar 2: In this course, you will learn the basic rules and structures of English grammar and analyze these structures in authentic contexts. Our goal is to prepare you for accurate understanding of what you read and listen and for the use of the complex grammar skills in writing and speaking with confidence.

Level 3 Courses

Reading and Writing 3: This course is a high intermediate level reading and writing class in which English reading and writing conventions will be taught and reviewed intensively. Uses of various structural patterns will also be taught to improve both oral and written communication. Some topics include identifying main ideas and details, pre-writing and the writing process, and draft editing and summary writing.

Grammar 3: In this course, you will learn high intermediate rules and structures of English Grammar. This class reviews sentence patterns and the tense system in both active and passive voice. You will learn the purpose, meaning, and function of this grammar by analyzing reading texts, through listening and speaking, and also by using it in your own paragraphs and essays to express your opinions and experiences. Quizzes and final exam assess your accurate use of the grammar.

Level 4 Courses

Reading and Writing 4: In this course, you will learn how to analyze the basic components of academic reading & writing and critical thinking skills in addition to strategies for academic reading and how to write an academic research paper. The final project of this class is to write a 5-page academic research paper using other sources. You don’t need to buy a course book for this course.

Grammar 4: In this course, you will learn advanced rules and structures of English grammar. By the end of this class, you will be able to use complex grammatical structures in your writing and speaking. You will have a midterm and a final exam in this class in addition to other assignments given by the instructor.
