Computer Information Systems

The Computer Information Systems (CIS) program will prepare you for entry-level business positions requiring the use of computer applications, and will qualify you in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and database management applications. More advanced students may enroll in telecommunications and computer networking courses.
What You Will Learn
The CIS department offers a wide range of courses focusing on computer literacy, from which you will gain knowledge and understanding of computers and their uses. You’ll gain three levels of proficiency, which we call T-O-P:
- Terminology – Ability to read, write, and understand “geek” language.
- Operations – Ability to use computers to get work done, e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and database management.
- Programming – Ability to code instructions for computers to operate on desktops, networks, and on the internet.
In some instances, if you have work experience in the above-mentioned areas, you may challenge courses based on that experience. If you are seeking advanced placement, you must meet with an instructor to verify your knowledge and skills.
Recommended Course Sequence
See the Course Catalog for required prerequisites for CIS courses.
