We aim to provide you with the tools to succeed in your educational journey at College of Alameda.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide centralized access to programs and services that are designed to assist students in succeeding in their academic endeavors, including the development of learning skills and attitudes for effective performance in the college environment, as well as the enhancement of thinking abilities and knowledge base to provide instructional support to faculty in the classroom.

In furtherance of these goals, the Learning Resources Center will maintain an effective, comprehensive, and integrated array of programs and services providing individual needs assessment, individual and small-group peer tutoring, personalized computer-assisted tutoring, and computer-assisted supervised tutoring arrangements linked to specific courses.

To this end, the specific functions of the Learning Resource and Tutoring Center shall be to:

  1. Maintain a well-organized, efficient, and accountable Learning Resources Center to house programs and services to support student learning.
  2. Provide individual and small-group tutoring for all students who need assistance to succeed in their academic classes.
  3. Provide tutoring modalities specifically designed to address the needs of the under-prepared and at-risk student.
  4. Provide computer-assisted learning support in the Mathematics Lab. Writing Center, Basic Skills Lab, and ESL Lab to address the specialized needs of the student populations served by each of those labs.
  5. Include in all LRC activities the component of fostering and promoting good study skills and interpersonal relations skills.
  6. Assist instructors in developing and delivering computer-assisted classroom activities to support and supplement lecture classes.
  7. Provide free access and assistance in accessing the world of the Internet and World Wide Web, as well as the benefits of other technological advances, to students who do not have such access available to them at home.
  8. Integrate learning support programs and services with all areas and efforts within the college community.

To access the Learning Resource Center's services, enroll in the free course LRNRE 501 in Campus Solutions.

Tutoring

To sign up for tutoring,

  1. Enroll in LRNRE 501
  2. Consult the tutoring schedule here
  3. Go to https://cccconfer.zoom.us/my/coatutor (Links to an external site.)

Once you are in the Zoom Link, you will be directed to the “virtual front desk,” where a clerk will pair you with a tutor.

Please have the following ready before joining the Zoom online tutorial:

  • Student’s Full Name
  • Student ID Number
  • Name of the course you need help with

Major: Computer Science

Bio & Tutoring Experience: I am an international student from Vietnam and I have been tutoring at COA since Fall 2022. Some of the things I love most about tutoring are helping students with their academic needs and being able to create an environment where we can all learn from each other.

Fun Fact: I love animals and traveling. In my free time, I enjoy exploring the city, trying new foods, and meeting people from different cultures

Major: Biology

Bio & Clerical Experience: I am from West Africa, Benin Republic, and I have been a clerk at COA since Fall 2022. Some of the things I love most about being a clerk are being able to meet with different people from diverse backgrounds and cultures; helping students and making sure they get the necessary help for their academic work; and creating a safe and fun environment.

Fun Fact: I love dancing and traveling. In my leisure time, I enjoy creating dance steps with friends. I also find joy in exploring the city, different countries, and making friends.

Junhao Ma (Jay)

Tutor: Economics, Math, Basic Biology

Bio & Experience: Hello, my name is Junhao Ma (Jay), an economics tutor at the College of Alameda. Besides economics, I excel in Pre-calculus, Calculus, History, and basic Biology. I’m fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese and enjoy playing basketball and hiking. I believe that a healthy mind and body are vital for academic success. My tutoring style is to support the tutee and help them achieve academic goals and enjoy learning.

Fun fact: One fun fact about me is I’m fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese, but sometimes I mix them up and end up speaking “Cantodarin”!

2nd year Community College student trying to transfer to either UC Berkeley or UC Irvine. I was a peer tutor at my high school and have decided to continue tutoring here at COA. I like to create a secure space for students to learn and grow.

Fun Fact: I enjoy cooking in my spare time, and if I had to choose a type of food to eat for the rest of my life I’d choose Mexican food

Bio & Tutoring Experience: For the last 11 years, I have been tutoring Math (especially Statistics) at the College of Alameda. My career has been programming databases for various banking institutions and actuary. I found tutoring to be a most rewarding endeavor.

Bio & Tutoring Experience: My background is in Business Administration, emphasizing in Data Analytics and Investment Management Firms. Since 2020, I have been working at LRC as tutor in the Computer Open Lab answering to  students’ questions about how to do better in college. I believe that sharing  knowledge between students and tutors it create positive environment in the college.

Fun fact: I’m a book collector but I wouldn’t say I like reading a lot. Maybe 2 or 3 books per year.
