The Associated Students of College of Alameda (ASCOA) is the official student government representing and serving the College of Alameda student body. ASCOA is committed to strengthening the student experience through leadership, advocacy, engagement, and support for student-centered programs and initiatives.

Interested in Joining ASCOA?

The ASCOA application is now open to College of Alameda students interested in filling vacant positions for the 2026–2027 academic year.

Positions are filled through an appointment process. Applicants will be contacted during the Fall 2026 semester and invited to interview at an ASCOA meeting. Following the interviews, ASCOA members will vote to appoint students to the available positions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Enrolled in 5 semester units at College of Alameda
  • Good standing with College and/or PCCD
  • Students that have already served 3 years or 6 semesters on the ASCOA are not eligible

Time Commitment

Senators are expected to:

  • Attend weekly mandatory meetings.
  • Complete a minimum of 4 office hours each week
  • Serve on at least one campus committee
  • Assist with planning ASCOA events and activities
  • Additional tasks and responsibilities may be expected

ASCOA's Roles & Descriptions

All ASCOA members shall attend ASCOA meetings in person, as ASCOA is a student senate governed by the Brown Act. All ASCOA members are also responsible for monitoring their ASCOA email and communicating/responding in a timely manner. ASCOA members should expect to devote 3-4 hours a week to their service.

President

The ASCOA President is the voice of all CoA students.

This means that the President must be unbiased and strive to create the best College of Alameda experience for each type of student.

  • To remain unbiased, the President cannot vote on ASCOA issues, unless there is a tie.
  • The President must attend and lead all ASCOA meetings. The President must run meetings in accordance with Robert’s Rules of Order and the Brown Act.
  • The President must also attend Executive Board meetings and the Board of Trustees meetings.
  • The President must accommodate around 8 hours a week for ASCOA Duties.

Vice President of Operations (VPO)

The VPO will assume duties of the President in the event of their absence.

The VPO is responsible for:

  • ASCOA operations,
  • management of the Student Senate,
  • the master calendar of events,
  • informing the Student Senate of district and state meetings necessary to ASCOA,
  • maintaining a master copy of all records,
  • receiving all committee and board reports,
  • receiving applications for ASCOA appointments and club establishment.

Additionally, the VPO shall assist the President with various administrative duties as may be assigned and is responsible for all committees placed under their authority.

Vice President of Programs (VPP)

The VPP is responsible for:

  • A draft and maintenance of the Student Life calendar,
  • The receival of all event and activity proposals for the Student Senate to approve,
  • Assurance of the occurrence of Student Life events during the school year,
  • The facilitation of collaboration between Student Clubs and ASCOA on events and activities.

Furthermore, the VPP shall chair all committees placed under their authority and shall assist the President with various programming duties as assigned.

Secretary

The Secretary is responsible for:

  • Taking and maintaining minutes of the open and closed sessions of the Senate meetings,
  • Writing and maintaining all Student Senate correspondences,
  • Maintaining a contact list of all members of the board, clubs, senate committees, and others necessary to the function of ASCOA,
  • Making and distributing copies of all documentation open to the public upon request.

Moreover, the Secretary is responsible for all committees placed under their authority and shall assist the President with various secretarial duties as may be assigned.

Treasurer

The Treasurer is responsible for:

  • Keeping an accurate account of all funds and expenditures of ASCOA,
  • Facilitating any funding request (they can approve requests in the absence of the President),
  • The conservation of the treasury, including generating income for the Senate.

Communications Officer

It shall be the duty of the Communications Officer to:

  • Lead and coordinate ASCOA marketing, communications, and student outreach efforts.
  • Promote ASCOA events, programs, student elections, opportunities, and initiatives.
  • Share timely information and updates that are relevant and beneficial to students.
  • Help maintain consistent and accessible communication across ASCOA platforms and channels.
  • Oversee committees assigned to the Communications Officer.
  • Support student engagement through creative and student-centered outreach strategies.
  • Assist the President with marketing, communications, and outreach duties as assigned.

Senators (8 in total)

  • Every senator must attend two shared governance meetings.
    • Shared governance meetings are meetings where faculty, staff, and students can discuss any concerns they have about COA.
  • Every senator must attend all ASCOA meetings.
  • Every senator must be involved in a minimum of two projects for the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Senators must have office hours.
  • Senators must accommodate a minimum of 4 hours a week for ASCOA duties.

Student Trustee (Two Peralta District Student Representatives)

Two Student Trustees serve as the link between all four colleges.

  • Serve as a District-level student representative for Peralta Community College District, representing students across all Peralta colleges.
  • Hold one of two Student Trustee positions (eligible students may come from any
  • Peralta college).
  • Attend Peralta Board of Trustees meetings as the student representative and participate in Board discussions as permitted.
  • Prepare for Board meetings by reviewing agendas, board packets, and relevant district updates impacting students.
  • Provide student perspective and input on district policies, initiatives, and decisions that affect students.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Board and student leadership across the Peralta colleges.
  • Meet regularly with the Peralta College student senates/AS bodies to share Board updates and gather feedback, concerns, and priorities.
  • Bring information and student concerns back to the Board to ensure student voices are represented at the district level.
  • Communicate key district decisions and resources back to students and student governments in a clear and timely way.
  • Collaborate with District administration and campus leaders as needed to support student-focused planning and advocacy.
